Let us pray
As we are in our forth installment of “Running With Jonah”, I want to tag this episode, "When You're in the Belly of the Beast"
Introduction:
Brothers and sisters, we’ve all been in some tough situations before, haven’t we? Some of us have been in the kind of mess where it felt like everything around us was closing in. You know what I’m talking about—the kind of place where the only way out is through God’s hand!
Today, we’re still at looking a our friend Jonah who now finds himself literal in the belly of the beast. He ran from God, tried to hide, but God had a way of getting his attention.
Let’s set the scene: Jonah has been swallowed by a great fish, a mighty creature sent by the Lord. It’s dark, it’s cold, and it feels like there’s no way out. But God, in His grace, is about to teach Jonah—and us—something profound. Are you ready for this?
Point 1: God Won't Let You Run Forever
Jonah 1:17 says, "Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights." You see, Jonah thought he could run from his assignment. God called him to go to Nineveh, but Jonah said, "No, I’m going to Tarshish!" How many times have we run from what God called us to do?
Now, I don’t know what your "Tarshish" looks like. Maybe it's avoiding that tough conversation with a family member. Maybe it’s delaying your ministry because you feel inadequate. But let me tell you, God has a way of catching up with you!
Sometimes He’ll allow a storm to shake up your life—not to destroy you, but to redirect you. Jonah’s running led him to the belly of the fish, but even that was God’s provision. He didn’t let Jonah drown in the storm, did He? No! He sent the fish. That fish may have been uncomfortable, but it was God’s way of saying, "I still have a plan for you, Jonah."
Point 2: The Belly of the Beast Is the Place of Prayer
Jonah 2:1 says, "Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish’s belly." Don’t miss this! Jonah didn’t wait until he was out of the fish to pray. He didn’t wait for the situation to change before he started seeking God. Right there, in the middle of the darkness, in the middle of the mess, he cried out to God.
Family, sometimes God has to put us in a situation where all we can do is pray. When you’re in that tight spot—when the walls are closing in—you need to recognize that God is calling you to seek Him. Stop trying to fix it on your own! Jonah didn’t have any tools, no GPS, no way of navigating out of the fish. He had to rely on God.
The belly of the fish is not just a place of confinement—it’s a place of consecration. God will use that dark moment in your life to shape you, mold you, and make you into what He intended all along. Don’t despise the belly, because it’s where you learn to call on the name of the Lord!
Point 3: Deliverance Is Coming!
And then, we get to Jonah 2:10, which says, "So the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land." Somebody say, "Deliverance is coming!" You may feel like you’re stuck right now. You may feel like you’ve been in this dark place for three days or three years. But I came to tell you that when God speaks, everything has to shift.
That fish couldn’t hold Jonah forever! When God says it’s time to be released, no power in hell can keep you bound! That addiction can’t keep you, that depression can’t hold you, that financial crisis won’t break you—because when God speaks, He makes a way out of no way.
Jonah came out of that fish, not just to go back to where he started, but to fulfill the assignment God originally gave him. He went to Nineveh, and because he obeyed, an entire city was saved. Your deliverance isn’t just about you—it’s about the people on the other side of your obedience!
Conclusion:
Brothers and sisters, some of you are in the belly right now. It’s uncomfortable, it’s painful, and you feel stuck. But I’m here to tell you that God has not forgotten you. The same God who allowed you to go into the belly is the same God who will bring you out!
Just like Jonah, He’s using this season to realign you, to get you back on track. So don’t lose heart, don’t stop praying, and don’t stop believing. Because when God speaks to your situation, everything will shift, and you’ll step into the destiny He’s prepared for you!
